Counselling in Northern Ireland Evolving or Regressing?

Northern Ireland is an evolving entity in many ways.  Devolved powers to the Stormont parliament include responsibility for health care.  Recently debate in primary health care has focused on overstretched and struggling services; extending waiting times for appointments and little significance to the concern of mental health.  In the wider national process to Improve Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) cognitive behavioural therapies have found sole favour with the government.

Supervisiors Supporting Counsellors in N. Ireland

The above article was printed in the BACP Therapy Today in October 2012, pages 28 & 29. In it Davy Hutton discusses some professional concerns about ethic practices and how supervisors need to support counsellors when agencies require them to work outside the ethical framework. A very definite and interesting read,. Davy is a BACP Accredited Senior Counsellor & Supervisor.

Why Counselling

Many people wonder about counselling.  Often it is shrouded in some sort of mystery and quite too often hokie-pokie  Someone once said that 20 years ago we never heard of counselling and now we all know a counsellor and they tend to be our most dysfunctional friend.  Counsellors may not like to hear that but in some incidents it could be true.  As a counsellor I often ask what is the most helpful I can be to others and why do they come to me?  I too have problems and get upset or have set backs.
